Energy Fact Book, 2024-2025: Energy efficiency

There are a variety of ways in which Canadians use energy: in transportation, industrial production, commercial and institutional spaces, agriculture, and in our homes. Technological advances leading to improved energy efficiency help Canadians use less energy while continuing to meet their daily needs, therefore contributing to Canada's climate goals.

Key facts

  • Canada's primary energy use in 2021 was 12,419 petajoules (PJ).
  • Canada's secondary energy use in 2021 was 8,855 PJ. Total secondary energy use increased 10% from 2000 to 2021.
  • 78% of residential energy consumption, and 62% of commercial and institutional energy consumption is used for space and water heating.
  • Residential energy use increased 1% since 2000 but would have increased by 36% without energy efficiency improvements.
  • Per capita energy consumption was 12% lower in 2021 than in 2000.
  • Canada used 25% less energy per dollar of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 than in 2000.
